So I lost 3 pounds this week. At least that is what the scale said at my weekly weigh-in at my Weight Watchers meeting this morning.
I celebrated afterwards by attending a cake decorating class at Michaels.
Yup. You read it right. Cake decorating. Which involved baking a cake. And icing. Lots of icing. And supplies I never knew existed.
You might be wondering why I’d be torturing myself with a cake decorating class when I’m trying to lose weight. I wonder about that, too.
So here’s the thing. I’m not a good cook or baker. But I can pin thanks to Pinterest 🙂
In all seriousness, I’d been thinking about taking a cake decorating class for several years. But when it came time to actually sign up for a class, I always had an excuse. Laziness, fear of failure. I decided, though, that this would be the year I’d go out of my comfort zone and finally take that leap. To finally try things that I’d been thinking about. Like cake decorating and creating a public blog.
I did learn a lot in the class today. For one, I had never baked a round cake before. Here’s the “before” picture I took of the cake that I baked the night before the class.
And here’s the “after” picture.
I’ll be honest, I was hoping I’d do a better job. I blame Pinterest for that. Desserts look so perfect on Pinterest, don’t they? But I have to keep reminding myself that life isn’t like that…..perfect. And while my cake isn’t perfect, I made it myself. And I learned a lot in the process.
I learned what a leveler is, and what it does. It was pretty cool to cut the cake in two halves using the leveler, and then using icing as a layer between the two cakes. And speaking of icing, I learned how to mix different colors. I think the part I really struggled with were the different tips that can be used to create different designs. I wasn’t quite able to finish decorating my cake during class because we ran out of time, so I finished it up at home, by creating a smiley face. I thought my son would get a kick out of it. And he did.
It was worth it this morning when he asked me if I could help him bake a cake. It was worth it when a smile lit up on his face when he saw the decorated cake. And it was worth it when he told me the cake tasted good.
And with that, I hope to take more classes in the future. I bought supplies after all 🙂
Oh, and as for the weight loss, I managed to just take one bite of a piece of cake. While I certainly wanted to eat more, I kept thinking of the number on the scale. And it worked.
