There’s more to Disney World than theme parks. For example, did you know that you and your family can go on a guided bass fishing excursion through Disney? I wasn’t aware of this program until recently, when my family was invited to go fishing during our recent visit to Disney World. While Disney hosted my family for the fishing excursion, all opinions are my own. Fishing at Walt Disney World with preschoolers is a wonderful experience, and it’s one that I highly recommend for families of all ages.

Growing up, my parents took me and my sister fishing all the time. I wanted my preschool aged son to have the same experience. And what better place than Walt Disney World? There are several reasons why I recommend fishing at Disney World, especially with preschoolers. It’s a great program for those who have never been fishing before – not only is all the equipment provided, but families are partnered with an experienced guide. For us, this marked the first time that both my husband and our 4 year old son had been fishing. My husband ended up catching 11 fish, while our son caught 7 fish. They were both excited that their first fishing excursion was a success!

Fishing at Disney World is presented by TakeMeFishing.org. There are several locations throughout the Walt Disney World Resort where guests can get a guided bass fishing excursion. Each excursion can accommodate up to 5 people and it includes everything you need to fish (bait and tackle), as well as beverages and a subscription to Bassmaster Magazine. Our guided fishing excursion was at the marina at Disney’s Contemporary Resort and it was extremely easy to get there from our resort, Disney’s Beach Club Resort. We met our guide, Brian, first thing in the morning, and our excursion lasted 2 hours.

This is the sunrise that greeted us when we arrived at the Marina. It was a perfect morning to fish.
Once we met Brian, it was time to get on the fishing boat. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Our guide, Brian, is not only extremely nice, but he’s also very patient, which is important to us since we have a preschool aged child. He also provided my son with a life jacket, which is also important for water safety.

“Fish are friends, not food”
Remember the above quote from the movie Finding Nemo? My son loves this quote and it has stuck with him ever since our stay at the Aulani. Fishing at Walt Disney World involves catching – and then releasing – bass fish. I am glad that fishing at Disney World includes the same philosophy.
Family Bonding
Because the fishing excursion is on a private lake, it gave us the opportunity to bond as a family in a way we wouldn’t be able to bond at home. It was calm and peaceful, and it allowed us to focus on enjoying the experience together. That meant no electronics, no tablets, and no television.

I know that I’ll never forget seeing the look of excitement on my son’s face when he caught his first fish. And that is priceless.
