Secret Society of Second-Born Royals will be available to stream on Disney Plus beginning September 25, 2020. An original Disney Plus movie, it’s about second-born royals who have superpowers. My 7 year old son and I both watched the movie together and we found it to be very entertaining. As a result, here are 5 reasons to watch Secret Society of Second-Born Royals on Disney Plus!
5 Reasons to Watch Secret Society of Second-Born Royals
My family and I are enjoying the original movies that have recently been released on Disney Plus, like Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe. I can now add Secret Society of Second-Born Royals to the list! The movie primarily focuses on Sam (played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee), who is second in line for the throne in her kingdom. After a rebellious incident gone wrong, her mom sends her to summer school, where she’s joined by other second-born royals. It isn’t a typical summer school, though. That’s because the royals discover they have superpowers. Add a villain who has telekinesis into the mix and you have an entertaining sci fi movie to watch for families. Below are the reasons why!
It’s fun watching the royals discover their superpowers.
Sam is joined by four other second-born royals who have superpowers. It turns out they have a special gene that gives them extraordinary abilities, making them part of a Secret Society that protects the world from assassins and criminals. While Sam has super senses, some of the other second-born royals can become invisible, control insects, and tell people what to do. Which brings me to the next reason to watch the Secret Society of Second-Born Royals….
There is plenty of action (and special effects) to keep kids engaged.
I was really surprised with the amount of action and special effects in this movie. One of my son’s favorite scenes is when the royals undergo training. And because there is a villain with telekinesis, you can except some fight scenes. With that being said, though, the fight scenes are not graphic or gruesome.
There are pop cultures references that parents and older kids will enjoy.
There are several pop culture references throughout the movie, like references to The Breakfast Club, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and the Avengers. While younger kids won’t be familiar with some of the references, older kids and their parents will. And while there are several touching – and serious – moments in the film, there are comedic moments as well.
It’s rated PG.
I love watching movies that are enjoyable for the whole family. Secret Society of Second-Born Royals is rated PG, which means that overall, it’s family friendly although parental guidance is suggested. There aren’t any sexually suggestive scenes or profanity used by any of the characters. However, it does contain some material parents might not like for their young children. For example, Sam has flashbacks of her father who died when she was younger. Additionally, there are tense moments when the villain (played by Greg Bryk) tries to kill some of the characters. However, my son has watched most of the Avengers movies, and this was mild in comparison. But as always, use your discretion.
Its message is one that both kids and their parents can appreciate.
Throughout the movie, Sam feels like she doesn’t measure up to her sister, who is about to become queen. But as James (her instructor) wisely tells her “Just because you are second born, doesn’t mean you are second best.” That’s a message that will resonate with most people who feel like they are never good enough, regardless of whether or not they have siblings.
This movie exceeded my expectations. I hope that we will get a sequel in the future!
