What happens when the Spider-Guy meets the Green Gremlin? You’ll have to see The Gaslight Theatre’s latest production, The Incredible Spider-Guy, to find out! But you can expect there will be a lot of laughter and great music. My family and I had the opportunity to see The Incredible Spider-Guy for ourselves and our verdict is unanimous – we love it! We were guests of the Gaslight Theatre in exchange for my review, but as always, all opinions are my own. I have been a fan of The Gaslight Theatre long before I started this blog. So without further ado, here’s my review of Gaslight Theatre’s The Incredible Spider-Guy!
A REVIEW OF GASLIGHT THEATRE’S THE INCREDIBLE SPIDER-GUY!
Every time I see a performance at the Gaslight Theatre, I think it’s the best show I’ve seen. Then, I see the next show, and I think THAT’s been the best performance I’ve seen. So I’m just going to say it. This is my favorite performance so far. If you have children who love superheroes, you will want to see The Incredible Spider-Guy. All of the performers are ON it!
The Incredible Spider-Guy is essentially a spoof of the Spiderman movies. Jake Chapman is extremely convincing as Spider-Guy and Todd Thompson also does a great job as the Green Gremlin (who is very similar to the Green Goblin).
The rest of the characters/performers are also great to see in person – they bring their own unique humor to the storyline. For example, Spider-Guy has a crush on Mary Lou. When one of the characters asks how they met, another character responds with “on the web.” LOL!! While I’m sure the characters follow the script, they also ad lib at times – and that’s also what makes the Gaslight Theatre different from other theatrical performances.
There are also plenty of slow motion action sequences as well as acrobatic moves. And I LOVE the props that are used in this performance. Several scenes occur on the subway, and it’s fun to see the characters bob up and down along with the motion of the subway. And remember the famous scene in Spiderman, where Spiderman hangs upside down and his love interest Mary Jane gives him a kiss? This scene is reenacted in the Incredible Spider-Guy. I heard several gasps from other audience members once this happened, and major kudos to Jake Chapman for being able to pull it off. The Incredible Spider-Guy is worth seeing, just for this alone! But add everything else to the mix, like the jokes, the songs, the talented performers, and the props, and you have an extremely entertaining performance.
Here’s a little more about The Incredible Spider-Guy:
Mild mannered student, Billy Baker, is just like any other student at Excelsior Junior College – until a science experiment goes terribly wrong. When he is bitten by a genetically altered spider, Billy assumes powers and abilities he never dreamed of, but now he faces a difficult choice! Should he remain an average college student or use his new powers to help the imperiled citizens of Center City? Also, he must decide if his superpowers will help him get noticed by the lovely new student, Mary Lou. Will Billy defeat the dastardly Gremlin and his criminal associates and will Spider Guy find true love with Mary Lou? Find out as the Gaslight Theatre swings into action with its musical spoof….The Incredible Spider Guy!”
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
IS IT KID FRIENDLY?
Yes! My son loved cheering for Spider-Guy and booing the Green Gremlin. There is only one part that scared him, and that’s when Billy Baker (aka Spider-Guy) is “bitten” by the (fake) spider. He quickly got over it, though. He’s still talking about the Incredible Spider-Guy.
