Buckle up your seatbelts and get ready to race to the Gaslight Theatre to see its latest production, Rock-a-Billy Raceway! Car racing fans, fans of the movie Grease, and fans of 1950s music in general are in for a treat. Not only is Rock-a-Billy Raceway a fun, lighthearted performance to see in person, but it’s also followed by an Olio that will make you want to stand up and Twist and Shout 🙂 My family and I were hosted by The Gaslight Theatre in exchange for a review of Rock-a-Billy Raceway but as always all opinions are my own. Keep reading for a review as well the chance to win tickets to see a performance!
A Review of the Gaslight Theatre’s Rock-a-Billy Raceway
Rock-a-Billy Raceway is Gaslight Theatre’s latest production, and it’s also new to the stage overall. Fans, especially, will enjoy the similarities between Rock-a-Billy Raceway and the movie Grease. The plot is easy to follow, from the car races to the dance competitions. And the cast does a great job in all their character roles, from Jake Chapman’s show stopping portrayal of good guy Johnny Rambler, to sassy Wanda (played by Heather Stricker) and Johnny Rambler’s determined love interest, Rolinda Porter (played by Janee Page). The laughs are plenty as well – for example, whenever the audience booed bad guy Boss Harker (played by Armen Dirtadian), he responded by saying that he can handle his “boos.” The performers’ willingness to interact with the audience is one of the reasons I love the Gaslight Theatre.
The stage sets are also extremely creative. Both the lighting and the props make for innovative car racing scenes that are definitely crowd pleasers.
Here’s a little more about The Gaslight Theatre presents Rock-a-Billy Raceway:
“It’s the 1950s and Small-town is bursting with excitement as the Miss Small Town Rock and Roll Dance Contest and the Raceway 250 approach! Pops Porter, diving classic car Greased Lightening, feels like this is the year he will finally win, but will foul play get in the way? His daughter, Rolinda Porter, finally has the nerve to compete in the Dance Contest, but Tiffany Harker and her father have other plans! TV Celebrity Buddy Baker takes us through all the fun in Small-town in this high-energy, family-friendly melodrama production!”
OLIO
I typically enjoy the Olios, but this particular Olio really impressed me and my family. You’ll definitely want to stick around to see it. It’s called the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Olio and it’s now my favorite olio. I’d go see Rock-a-Billy Raceway again just to see the Olio! Gaslight performers sing classic Beatles songs like I Want to Hold Your Hand, I Saw Her Standing There, and Twist and Shout. They also sing songs like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Yellow Submarine. The performances are amazing to see in person, and the costumes and the props make it very real.
IS ROCK-A-BILLY RACEWAY KID FRIENDLY?
As with most of the Gaslight Theatre performances like The Incredible Spider-Guy and The Lone Stranger, Rock-a-Billy Raceway is also kid friendly. My 5 year old son really enjoyed it, especially since he loves cars. He was cheering for good guy Johnny Rambler during the car races and booing the bad guys like Boss Harker and Lunkhead. My son definitely looks forward to watching the shows at the Gaslight Theatre, and Rock-a-Billy Raceway was no exception.

When my husband and I heard about this show we wanted to plan to see it but unfortunately in January had an issue arise that put a stop to the planning/purchasing of tickets to see this show. We’ve been to the Christmas showing 2 years in a row and we’re so excited to plan a trip during the year of our 5th anniversary!
