If you’re looking for family friendly entertainment to ring in the new year, then you’ll want to mosey on down to the Gaslight Theatre to see its latest show, The Belle of Tombstone. My family and I were hosted by The Gaslight Theatre in exchange for a review of The Belle of Tombstone but as always, all opinions are my own. If you love westerns, or enjoy live performances in general, then The Belle of Tombstone will entertain everyone in the family, including kids. Keep reading for a review as well the chance to win tickets to see a performance!
A REVIEW OF THE GASLIGHT THEATRE’S THE BELLE OF TOMBSTONE
I love a good western. Add slapstick comedy, melodrama, and a little bit of romance to the mix and you end up with The Gaslight Theatre’s latest show, The Belle of Tombstone! Heather Stricker plays Belle, a saloon owner in a western town that Arizonans should be well familiar with, Tombstone!
Bad guys, Jack Diamond (played by Mike Yarema) and Ringo (played by Todd Thompson), quickly learn that they shouldn’t mess with Belle and U.S. Marshall Ned Wingate (played by Jake Chapman). But before they learn that lesson, there’s fun to be had in the form of a guitar falling from the sky, corny jokes, a stagecoach chase, and a slow motion western shootout.
Interaction between the performers is always fun to watch at the Gaslight Theatre, and The Belle of Tombstone is no exception. “My horse has fallen and it can’t giddy up.” So says David Orley’s character, Curly Bill! My family and I are also constantly impressed with the stage backdrops and the props that are used by the characters. For example, it truly looks like the characters are riding horses on the stage. There’s also a jail scene (which my son declared his favorite scene) as well as a scene in a mine shaft that causes a key character to break out in a Ring of Fire. Instead of riding off into the sunset, you’ll want to drive to the Gaslight Theatre to see a good old fashioned, laugh-out-loud, western parody.
Here’s a little more about The Gaslight Theatre presents The Belle of Tombstone:
“Tombstone was the last great frontier town and it sat high in the Arizona desert, smack dab on millions of dollars in silver ore. Through its dusty streets and elegant saloon doors passed a slew of colorful characters. The Gaslight Theatre takes you back to those days of bar room brawls, stage coach robberies and high-stepping saloon hall girls, all in the “Town Too Tough To Die.” Join The Gaslight Theatre for a Rootin’, Tootin’ great time!”
THE GRAND OL’ OPRY OLIO
The Grand Ol’ Opry Olio is very fitting, especially since The Belle of Tombstone is a western. Those of you that are fans of country music classics, especially, won’t be disappointed. I’ll confess that I wasn’t familiar with some of the songs. But it didn’t matter – it always helps when the audience starts belting out the tunes along with the performers. That’s the kind of energy that the Gaslight Theatre is able to bring out from its audience members.
IS THE BELLE OF TOMBSTONE KID FRIENDLY?
I asked my son what he thought about The Belle of Tombstone, and he said he didn’t just like it…….he loved it! LOL! So I think it’s safe to say that The Belle of Tombstone is very kid friendly. My son definitely looks forward to going to the Gaslight Theatre and even knows that there is a second location in town, the Gaslight Music Hall in Oro Valley.
The Food at the Gaslight Theatre
While the performances at the Gaslight Theatre are the main attraction, my family and I look forward to eating the food and popcorn as well. The Gaslight Theatre’s menu has been expanding over the years and doesn’t lack in variety, from pizza to my personal favorites, the mini chimis and the milkshakes. Kids also have plenty of options. For example, my son likes to order the peanut butter and jelly sandwich and the birthday cake milkshake!
And for the adults, the Gaslight Theatre has also added cocktails to the menu. My husband ordered the (appropriately named) Melodrama Margarita and he gave it his seal of approval.
