The food isn’t the only thing you’ll want to take a bite out of at the Gaslight Theatre while watching its latest production, The Vampire! Just in time for Halloween, our favorite performers at the Gaslight Theatre are back, this time taking on Bram Stroker’s Dracula! There’s nothing dark about The Gaslight Theatre’s interpretation of Count Dracula. My family loved it, especially my 5 year old son. My family and I were hosted by The Gaslight Theatre in exchange for a review of The Vampire but as always all opinions are my own. Keep reading for a review as well the chance to win tickets to see a performance!
A REVIEW OF THE GASLIGHT THEATRE’S THE VAMPIRE
The Gaslight Theatre usually has 5 different shows throughout the year. You might notice that the shows can be themed depending on the time of the year. For example, the holiday show is very popular, and a great way to get in the holiday spirit (this year it’s Scrooge, a Gaslight Musical, and I can’t wait!!). But for now, the Gaslight’s latest show, The Vampire, is perfect for this time of the year, since it’s so close to Halloween. There aren’t a lot of movies about vampires that I haven’t seen, from Bram Stroker’s Dracula, to The Lost Boys, to Underworld to yes, even Twilight. So you can imagine my excitement when I found out that the Gaslight Theatre’s The Vampire is a spoof of Count Dracula.
You’ll have a frighteningly good time, watching The Vampire (played by David Fanning) battle it out with vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing (played by David Orley). The rest of the performers are all equally great, including Joe Cooper as Mr. Renfield, Todd Thompson as Mr. Buttersworth, Jacob Brown as Franz, Mike Yarema as Dr. Seward, Heather Stricker as Mina, Erin Thompson as Miss Wills, and Janee Page as Lucy.
As always, the songs and dances throughout the show add to the overall fun. When The Vampire and Mina broke out in a rendition of Love is Strange, by Mickey & Sylvia, a huge grin came on my face.
Here’s a little more about The Gaslight Theatre presents The Vampire:
“Count Dracula travels from Transylvania to England and develops a taste for the blood of the innocent Mina. He is on a mission to make her his bride forever! Jonathon Seward and Dr Van Helsing set out on a desperate mission to destroy Dracula and to save Jonathan’s’ wife, Mina, before it’s too late. The hilarious case of characters ‘fleshes’ out this mystery for a fiendishly fun evening of entertainment and excitement! The Vampire will take a ‘bite’ out of your funny bone and have you howling with delight!”
WOLFMAN JACK’S HOWL-O-WEEN OLIO
Wolfman Jack, played by David Orley, is the emcee of the Howl-O-Ween Olio and he does a great job (and howl)! I loved seeing favorites like the Addams Family, Monster Mash, The Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice (Day-O/Shake Señora), Puttin’ on the Ritz, and Thriller come to life for us. My son is now completely obsessed with the Ghostbusters. As for the adults in my family, we loved it all, and I couldn’t think of any better way to end it with the reenactment of Thriller. As a child of the 80s, one of my favorite music videos was Michael Jackson’s Thriller. It was very cutting edge at the time, and it has remained an all time favorite.
IS THE VAMPIRE KID FRIENDLY?
Definitely! My son is familiar with vampires thanks to movies like Hotel Transylvania. However, Count Dracula is in a league of his own. I prepped him beforehand, letting him know that the show is about a vampire, but that it wouldn’t be scary. He understood, and he was extremely entertained. Count Dracula is comical and Joe Cooper, as Mr. Renfield, is hilarious! At one point, Joe Cooper stopped by at our table and grabbed some of our popcorn and ate it. My son thought it was the best thing ever and from that point on, he couldn’t stop laughing.
