Family Movie Night: Disney’s Aladdin
I will admit I was hesitant to initially see the live-action adaptation of Aladdin. For example, in the original animated version, Robin Williams is the epitome of the Genie so how would Will Smith compare? However, the movie (and Will Smith) quickly won me over. One of the things that I appreciated about this live-action adaptation of Aladdin is that while it stays true to the original, it also adds its own unique spin to the beloved classic. Much like the recent live-action adaption of DUMBO.
Guy Ritchie is the director for the live-action adaptation of Aladdin, and he brings his own flair to Agrabah. The movie itself is very colorful, filled with great special effects and fun dance sequences. And while those familiar with the original animation of Aladdin will recognize favorite songs like A Whole New World, they will also be introduced to new songs like Speechless, sung by Princess Jasmine (played by Naomi Scott).
Naomi Scott and Mena Massoud (who plays Aladdin) bring their characters to life with their great chemistry. Will Smith as the Genie is fantastic. And Marwan Kenzari also does a great job of bringing resident baddie Jafar to life. While Aladdin is definitely a love story, it’s also about the friendship between Aladdin and the Genie. As Genie warns Aladdin, people want power, but in the end, they are never satisfied and want more. This is a great lesson for both adults and kids – while it’s good to strive for more, it’s also important to be content with what you have.
Is Disney’s Aladdin kid friendly?
Can Will Smith get jiggy with it?! LOL. Yes, the movie is absolutely kid friendly! My son initially saw it at the movie theater when it was first released, and he watched it a second time with me and my husband. It’s definitely a fun movie to watch for family movie night.
