Finding ‘Ohana, a Netflix original movie, is now available for streaming. While it’s primarily a movie about a group of teenagers who search for lost treasure, it’s also about the importance of family and culture. Is it kid friendly? I’m answering that question and more in my Finding ‘Ohana parents guide. With a TV-PG rating that includes minimal use of profanity and some moments of peril, here’s what parents need to know about Finding ‘Ohana on Netflix.
Finding ‘Ohana on Netflix: A Parents Guide
In the movie, Pili (played by Kea Peahu) and Ioane (played by Alex Aiono) are siblings who travel back to Oahu with their mom Leilani (played by Kelly Hu) to help take care of their grandfather. There, Pili discovers a journal with mysterious instructions on where to find lost pirate treasure. Pili and Ioane are joined by local teenagers Casper (played by Owen Vaccaro) and Hana (played by Lindsay Watson) in their search for treasure. Here’s what parents need to know about Finding ‘Ohana on Netflix.
It’s Rated TV-PG
Finding ‘Ohana is rated TV-PG, which means that parental guidance is recommended. It’s mostly rated PG due to minimal use of profanity. For example, characters say words like “he**” and “a**.” And while they aren’t curse words, words like butt, butthead, fart, crap, and poop are also used.
There Isn’t Any Graphic Violence
There’s not any graphic violence in Finding ‘Ohana. However, one character ends up breaking a rib and there are some moments of peril. For example, one character gets stung by a spider and becomes partially incapacitated. There are also a few scenes where the siblings engage in “rough housing” and Pili pinches Ioane’s nipples in the process. Ouch!
Overall, though, the violence in this movie is very tame.
There Aren’t Any Sexually Suggestive Scenes
Unlike Bridgerton, there’s not any sexual content (like nudity) in this movie. There is flirting between two of the characters and a scene involving a kiss, but that’s the extent of it. All in all, there isn’t anything that should raise any red flags for parents.
Overall Thoughts
This is a fun movie to watch for family movie night! My 8 year old son not only loved the action and adventure, but he also enjoyed the storyline. While it’s a movie about a group of teenagers searching for lost treasure, it’s much more than that. A touching film about the importance of family and culture, it also has several comedic moments.
As for me, I also loved the references to pop culture, especially to some of my favorite movies like The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. To read fun facts about Finding ‘Ohana, as well as Goonies easter eggs, click here.
