You’re gonna have the hap-hap-happiest Christmas. Put on your favorite Christmas ugly sweater and head to the Gaslight Theatre to see its latest holiday performance, a spoof of Christmas Vacation. My family and I were hosted by The Gaslight Theatre in exchange for a review of its latest show, Christmas Vacation, but as always, all opinions are my own. Don’t be a Scrooge – Christmas Vacation will get you in the holiday spirit. Here’s what you need to know about the Gaslight Theatre’s performance of Christmas Vacation!
GASLIGHT THEATRE’S CHRISTMAS VACATION
Gaslight Theatre’s latest holiday show is a spoof of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, one of my favorite holiday movies. As soon as I heard about it, I knew this was a show that I wanted to see. The Gaslight Theatre knows how to bring its own spin to a popular movie and this show is no exception.
The plot is a simple one. Mark Grinsworth looks forward to celebrating Christmas in his small town every year, especially since he wins the annual holiday lights contest. This year, he has some competition from his neighbors Rod and Karen, who *gasp* hate Christmas (and who are instigated by the out-of-town villain Danny). Additionally, thanks to a freak reindeer accident, the only extended family member who could make it for Christmas is the screwy Cousin Teddy. Hijinks and Christmas songs ensue as Mark tries to make a comeback, with help from his wife Helen, and his son Gus, to save Christmas.
I always like to mention the Gaslight Theatre’s costumes, props, backdrops and music. The stage sets and props are fantastic, as usual, and they upped their game with the “shocking” special effects. It would not be a National’s Lampoon Christmas Vacation tribute without the hapless dad falling victim to amusing accidents.
IS CHRISTMAS VACATION KID FRIENDLY?
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation does have its fill of profanity and sexual innuendos. I mean, it was made in the the 80s 😉 However, have no fear, Gaslight Theatre fans. The Gaslight Theatre’s version is very family friendly. There are no curse words and no sexual content. And if you and your family love corny puns and jokes, a Gaslight Theatre staple, you will not be disappointed. Plus, Santa evens make an appearance, along with singing elves, in the Santa’s Workshop Olio. As a result, this is a wholesome show for the entire family to enjoy.
