Disco is alive and well, thanks to the Gaslight Theatre’s latest funky musical melodrama, Harlie’s Angels. Harlie’s Angels continues in a long line of engaging Gaslight spoofs. If you love the Gaslight like my family and I do, you will be very satisfied with Harlie’s Angels. My family and I were hosted by The Gaslight Theatre in exchange for a review of Harlie’s Angels, but as always, all opinions are my own. Here’s what you need to know about the Gaslight Theatre’s spoof of Charlie’s Angels.
GASLIGHT THEATRE’S HARLIE’S ANGELS
Charlie’s Angels, the 1970s era spy TV show that spawned three movies (including one in 2019) is one of the most iconic series of that era. It features three women, the “angels,” who work for a mysterious individual named “Charlie” who is heard but never seen, and Bosley who is the middleman between the two.
In this particular spoof, “Harlie” is calling the shots and needs the angels to defeat the envious villains who are trying to kidnap their wayward disco superstar and rule the world. Through disco of course! Like there is any other way.
There is mad cap hijinks, a trap that slowly fills up with water (reminds me of James Bond movies), two “wild and crazy guys” (paying homage to early Saturday Night Live), and great musical numbers from the era. And the other star of the show, the costumes! The Gaslight is renowned for their costumes and they are on point in this production, from the glitzy clothes of the angels, to the pastel suit of Beasley, I felt like I traveled back in time.
The set design was once again wonderful. I really enjoyed the creative use of the “monitor” that featured the Angels in action and the infernal disco device that… well… you need to watch the show to see what that does!
The most important element of all in the Gaslight production is the cast and they really did a great job engaging the audience. The actors are very natural in their portrayals and put a lot of great energy into the show. This is what sets the Gaslight apart; they forge a relationship with the audience and we all feel like we are in on the jokes.
You’ll also want to stick around for the Olio afterward, featuring, the Wizard of Oz. It is faithful to the music of that legendary movie and it was nice to see that they played it straight in this regard. That being said, my son could not stop laughing with the Munchkins made their appearance. It was a very nice way to end the evening!
The production, the food, and the service was top notch! Another great show put on by the Gaslight.
