Marvel Studios’ Eternals: A Parents Guide
In this latest installment to the MCU, a team of superheroes called Eternals battle creatures (called Deviants) to protect the human race. There’s more to the story, but no spoilers here with respect to the plot. Here’s what parents need to know about the Eternals age rating.
What is Eternals Rated?
Eternals is rated PG-13, which means that some material is not suitable for children under the age of 13. For example, the movie might contain violence, language, sexual content, and/or sexually suggestive language. Here, the movie does contain sexual content, violence, and language. More about all that below.
Language
Several of the recent Marvel movies, like Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings and Black Widow, have contained a lot of profanity so I was expecting more of the same in this movie. However, I was surprised. While there are some curse words (like s**t, h*ll, and a**), it was mostly sporadic. There is also a hand gesture thrown into the mix, though, when one character uses her middle finger to flip off another character.
Violence
Because this is a Marvel movie, you can expect a lot of action scenes that are violent in nature. The deviants, in particular, are nasty looking creatures. In some ways, they reminded me of the soul sucking creatures in Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. While the scenes aren’t overly graphic, blood is shown as well as dead bodies. Some characters are also stabbed.
Sexual Content
Is there nudity in Marvel Studios’ Eternals? Yes and no. Two of the characters are shown having sex, although private body parts aren’t shown. It’s a very brief scene and I’m not entirely sure why it was included in the movie, since it could have been implied off-screen. Nevertheless, parents of younger children will definitely want to be aware of this scene in particular. There are also a few scenes involving characters kissing.
Overall Thoughts
This isn’t a typical Marvel movie but that doesn’t make it a bad movie. My family and I enjoyed it, especially the action sequences. If I had any complaints, it would be that some of the characters weren’t fully developed. But, maybe we’ll learn more about them in future Marvel movies.
From a parent’s standpoint, the movie’s PG-13 rating is an accurate one. You can expect the same level of violence that’s depicted in most of the other Marvel movies and some sporadic curse words as well as the sex scene mentioned above. As always, parental guidance is recommended. Also, the movie is over 2 1/2 hours long which can be challenging for younger kids to sit through.
As for post credit scenes, there are two of them so you’ll want to be on the lookout for them.
