Holy Batman! My family and I had the opportunity to see an advanced screening of The LEGO Batman Movie prior to its release on February 10, 2017. As some of you might be aware, my 4 year old son loves LEGOS. He also likes Batman. So I figured he’d enjoy the movie. Without spoiling the movie for anyone, here are 6 reasons to see The LEGO Batman Movie.
Reason #1: It’s not just for kids
How many times have you dreaded going to a kids movie because you know you aren’t going to like it? *Raises hand* The LEGO Batman Movie doesn’t just appeal to children. Adults will love it, too. Indeed, I think there were certain lines in the movie that went over my son’s head. It didn’t matter, though – he loved the frenetic energy and the visual gags that were present throughout the whole movie. His favorite part of the movie? When The Joker calls the Batmobile, the “butt-mobile.” Speaking of The Joker, his facial expressions are priceless, especially when he receives “bad news” from Batman.
Reason #2: Robin is actually likeable
I’m just going to admit it. I have never been a fan of the character of Robin in the Batman franchise. Even Chris O’Donnell couldn’t win me over. And I like Chris O’Donnell. So when I first saw the preview for this movie, I cringed somewhat when I saw Robin on the screen. But, leave it to the imaginative world of LEGOS to inject new life into the character of Robin. Not only is Robin likeable in The LEGO Batman Movie, but he’s also endearing. In this movie, he’s less of a sidekick, but more of an adopted son. Some of the best exchanges are between Batman and Robin. For example, when Robin tells Batman that his name is Richard Grayson, but the other kids call him Dick, Batman’s retort to Robin is that kids can be cruel. LOL!
Reason #3: It’s extremely funny
The people who wrote the screenplay are geniuses. The dialogue is fast and furious, along with the action. There are also several pop cultural references throughout the movie, which make the movie even more enjoyable. For example, Batman tells us how he really feels about Ironman and Superman. And it’s not with fondness. Batman also establishes at the beginning of the movie that he’s not “into ‘ships.” As in relationships!
Reason #4: The special effects and the soundtrack
The special effects were AMAZING! The LEGOS really come to life in front of our very own eyes, and as I indicated above, the facial expressions are priceless. Batman movies in general are typically dark, but with LEGOS, it’s not quite as dark. And I think that goes a long way when several members of the audience are younger children. As for the soundtrack, the music is quite catchy.
Reason #5: The variety of characters
Even if you’re a die-hard Batman fan, you’re probably going to need to reference Wikipedia to figure out some of the names of the characters. However, there are plenty of familiar characters and villains as well. Batgirl, Catwoman, Superman, the Penguin, Bane, The Riddler……you name it, they’re in the movie. And for the Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Dr. Who fans? There’s something in it for you as well 🙂
Reason #6: The overall message of the movie
There are two main messages in the movie, both of which younger children can easily understand. First, the importance of teamwork (sometimes you need the help of friends and family to get you through a difficult situation), and second, that family is what you make of it.
We really enjoyed the movie. If you’re looking to see something funny, creative, and heartwarming, then The LEGO Batman Movie is a great movie to see.
