Vanessa Hudgens is back as Lady Margaret and (now Princess) Stacy in The Princess Switch 2: Switched Again, which will be available to stream on Netflix beginning today. However, is the movie kid friendly? I’m answering that question and more in my spoiler free parent movie review. With a TV-G rating that includes suggestive language and mild violence, here’s what parents need to know about The Princess Switch 2 on Netflix.
The Princess Switch 2: What Parents Need to Know
When we last saw Stacy in The Princess Switch, she had traveled from her hometown of Chicago to the Kingdom of Belgravia for a baking contest. There, she switched places with her lookalike Lady Margaret Delacourt, Duchess of Montenaro (also played by Vanessa Hudgens). During the switch, Stacy fell in love with the Prince Edward of Belgravia. I rarely watch the holiday movies on Hallmark anymore, but I do enjoy the holiday movies on Netflix every year. And The Princess Switch was no exception.
Fast forward two years later to The Princess Switch 2, and now Stacy has settled into married life with Prince Edward in Belgravia. However, not is all well with Lady Margaret’s love life – she’s about to become Queen of Montenaro and her romantic relationship with Kevin, Stacy’s best friend, is shaky at best. So Stacy and Margaret decide to switch one last time, but chaos ensues when Fiona aka Margaret’s cousin (who is also played by Vanessa Hudgens) decides to participate in the switch for her own nefarious reasons. That’s the plot in a nutshell. Here’s what parents need to know in order to make a decision as to whether the movie is kid friendly.
It’s Rated TV-G
It’s rated G which means that it’s suitable for general audiences. I did not notice any bad language at all. Other than a few kissing scenes, there aren’t any sexually suggestive scenes. There is, however, some mild violence and mild suggestive language, although I don’t think that younger kids will pick up on the suggestive language. It’s definitely not like the suggestive language that’s used in The Kissing Booth 2. As for the mild violence, there is a kidnapping involved in the switch, but it’s more comedic than anything. Overall, this is a movie that’s safe for younger kids to see.
Do you have to see The Princess Switch 1 to understand The Princess Switch 2?
No, not necessarily. Although I do think that the first movie is better than the sequel, so you’re missing out if you haven’t seen it yet. If you haven’t seen the first movie yet, I do recommend watching it before you watch the sequel.
Are there any cameos from the other characters from the Holiday Universe?
Like Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Netflix has its own universe, but for the holidays! Yes, it’s true 🙂 To see a who’s who graphic, you can click here. For those familiar with Netflix’s holiday universe, you’ll recognize some faces especially at the end of the movie. But I’m not revealing who, since this is a spoiler free review 🙂 I know that I was happy to see some familiar faces from other Netflix holiday movies.
Overall Thoughts
When I saw the trailer for The Princess Switch 2, I didn’t think the movie would be very good. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a fun holiday movie to watch, with its beautiful setting, holiday decorations, and the costumes. I’ve read that there will be another installment in the works, but I just hope it’s more original. My only complaint is that the storyline isn’t very original – The Princess Switch is based on The Prince and the Pauper and Vanessa Hudgens doesn’t need to play four different characters next time. The other characters don’t get much exposure, either, and it would be nice to see them become more than just secondary characters.

I hadn’t even heard of this movie, or the original. Maybe because I have boys?
Sounds interesting.
